New
Fall Film Calendar Now Available!
8/26/04
The Brattle Theatre's new fall film calendar is now available
at the box office, and will be mailed shortly to mailing list
subscribers. The online film calendar will also be updated shortly.
Included in the calendar is a special message from the directors
about our new programming format, the text of which appears below:
In this
calendar you will notice a change in our programming and calendar
design. We have changed to a horizontal repertory
format where our film series will be played over a week - or
a number of weeks - and week-long runs will be mixed in throughout
the calendar instead of only bracketing the beginning and the
end. In making this decision, it was very important to us that
the design change did not turn into a programming change as
well, and we think you will find that although the look has
changed the range of films, number of films, and general heart
of our programming has not. the Brattle's repertory
calendar is the cornerstone of the Brattle Film Foundation,
and we were reluctant to change anything about it. But in the
past few years we have had many requests to try to make our
printed calendar more readable and to have the movies play more
than once.
Fear
not! There won't be many more week-long runs than there are
now, but they will be mixed in throughout the calendar. We will
continue to play the same mixture of classic, cutting edge and
independent films that have been the focus of the Brattle Theatre
for over 50 years and has made it one of the most essential
cinemas in the country.
By programming
our series over a week, we will be able to screen some films
for more than one day, and our printed materials should be easier
to read. We have also been able to start a series of "crash
course in film history" programs that will become a regular
feature in our calendar - in this calendar: FILM NOIR 101. We
are confident that these changes will make it possible for more
people to be aware of, and be able to attend, our film programs,
which is a crucial element in guaranteeing the longevity of
repertory
film programming at the Brattle.
This
September/October calendar has many wonderful films in it, from
the new print of Jacques Tati's PLAYTIME to Catherine Briellat's
newest, ANATOMY OF HELL. We hope that you will enjoy this calendar,
and if you have any comments on these programming changes -
positive or negative - please contact us. Our goal is to ensure
that the Brattle Theatre's programming is vital to you, our
audience, and your opinions are the key to ensuring that happens.
Thanks
and see soon at the movies!

Sternberg Retrospective Focuses on Dietrich, Decadence"
5/7/04
By Ty Burr, Globe Staff. "Josef von Sternberg remains
the most dazzlingly impenetrable of the early geniuses of Hollywood,
a weary peacock of a director whose movies seem to have little
meaning beyond their own overstuffed selves. Yet you can't take
your eyes off them, and on the rare occasions von Sternberg's
work gets a big-screen airing out, you come out of the theater
in a state of overstimulated, decadent bliss."

THE LIFE Review
4/23/04
"Belvaux has stated that his parallel films can be watched
in any order you like. But saving this coolly pain-stricken tale
of romantic sacrifice and betrayal for last does have its benefits.
If you have committed to the entire project... this chapter leaves
you not only with a sense of completion but of an ascension to
a hard-won grace." - Ty Burr
