It's
Annual Fund Season At The Brattle!
It's
been a hectic year for many of us with the election, the World
Series, and the Summer Olympics. It's also been an important
year for movies, and for us at the Brattle. We are now entering
our annual fund season and hope that you will be able to continue
to support us, and our work at the Brattle Theatre.
As
a landmark of Harvard Square throughout
the last fifty years, the Brattle Theatre has weathered
many changes in competition, market, audience trends, and
the ever-increasing cost of real estate. Not only has it
survived, but it has remained the longest running art-house
in the area! We at the Brattle
Film Foundation want to insure that this continues to
be true for the next fifty years. But we can't do it without
your support. You are a vital part of what the Brattle is.
Beyond it's balcony, rear-screen projection, and old-fashioned
architecture, the Brattle
is its audience. The movies we screen directly reflect who
you are, how diverse and interesting you are as a group. As
a single screen theater we have only one income source for
the films, and since 50 cents of every dollar earned through
ticket revenue is paid back to the distributor, tickets sales
alone cannot support the Theatre. That is why Brattle
memberships and donations
from our supporters are so vital.

Our
Goal For 2004's Annual Fund Is To Raise $40,000
Every dollar, no matter what amount you contribute,
helps us to continue to provide the quality film programming
for which the Brattle has become famous! Please make
a donation before the end of the year to help us reach
our goal. The Annual Fund provides a valuable, unrestricted
fund source to support and develop the Foundation's film programming
at the Brattle Theatre.
Because
of our donors
the Brattle remains the only independent movie theater in
Cambridge! The BFF
was formed to sustain a crucial tradition - the Brattle Theatre's
repertory
film programming. We offer the entire history of cinema on
our one screen - from Orson Welles to Wong Kar-Wai. Your contribution
ensures that this vital programming continues despite the
industry's constantly changing landscape and the commercial
pressures of national chains (i.e. Loews
and Landmark
theaters). The costs and labor in providing repertory
programming is higher and more demanding than in any other
programming style. Its survival is only guaranteed by the
continued commitment our contributors show with their donations,
our members show with their memberships, and our general audience
shows through their attendance!

Since
the Brattle Film Foundation began programming
and operating the historic Brattle Theatre in
2001, we have strived to provide our members and
general audience better access to and understanding
of the film world than any other local theater,
providing the community with unique and exciting
programming and events like:
Appearances
by screen actors: Lili
Taylor, Chris Cooper, Ethan Hawke, Sarah Polley,
Bruce Campbell,
Gabriel Byrne, Richard Linklater, Philip Seymour
Hoffman;
Discussions
with filmmakers: legendary cinematographer
Gordon
Willis, film directors Charles Burnett, Greg
Pak, John Sayles, Albert
Maysles, film producer and composer Quincy
Jones;
Film
Festivals: Independent
Film Festival of Boston, Boston
Fantastic Film Festival, ResFest,
Boston
Underground Film Festival, New
England Film and Video Festival, New
England Animation Bash.
We
are proud of our accomplishments during our first
three years and look forward to having many more
in the future.
